Pictures of the DR

This is the beach where I go surfing. Very pretty.

Me at Playa Grande, one of the most incredible beaches I've been to.
This is one of my favorite campers. He is confined to a wheel chair, but always has a smile on his face. This was on parade day when we all marched through town in funny hats and with banners.

My Dominican girlfriend... actually one of the kids grandmas. The camper took the picture, not me, I swear.

DREAMing in the DR

For the next several weeks, I will be spending my time in the wonderful country of the Dominican Republic working as a volunteer for DREAM International. DREAM is a NGO based in New York dedicated to improving education in impovershed barrios throughout the DR. I will be teaching Science and Nature courses in a summer camp for underpriveleged youth ages 5-16. I have never worked extensively with children before, so I am a bit worried that I will lack the skills required to keep rowdy kids in check while trying to teach them something of value. I will be working with a group of approximately 35 other volunteers and will be living in the town of Cabarete, a beautiful beachfront town considered to be the kite-surfing capital of the Caribbean. I will post a few of my more interesting experiences and hopefully share a lesson or two that I am sure I will learn while trying to teach the children of Cabarete.

Rollin' in Miami

My trip to Miami was the perfect end to a crazy semester. MCAT preparations and a crazy slew of classes was incredibly taxing, and relaxing on South Beach listening to some killer tunes and reading a good book was the perfect way to unwind. There was a sea breeze blowing and high flying Caribbean clouds floating by. The waves weren't huge, but they kept the surfers busy. I need one of these beach things about 500 miles closer to campus...

My buddy was checking out the University of Miami, so we spent a morning on campus. The U of Miami was much smaller and less well kept than I expected, and I think he will choose his alternatie university. However, the one bright, shining feature that mountainwest schools can't compete with would definitely be the palm trees....and the really big drinking fountains...

Living on the edge

Have you ever had the opportunity to behold a truly incredible mullet? Many relate their first mullet siting to a personal and deep religious experience. When did I learn to stop worrying and love the mullet? Car show, Sandy, Utah, January 2006. The flowing manes took my breath away. I was left with only one question: Which one is the man?

I really appreciated how spotless the auto show was. Not surprisingly, the reason for such impecible cleanliness could be traced back to a mullet-sporting sanitation engineer. Nothing but the best and brightest are employed by the Utah Expo Center.
