Deciding to paint two small walls in our dining room seemed like such a good idea to begin with. How hard could it be to add a bit of color to our dining experience? Brianna envisioned a "non-intrusive-not-too-dark-olive green" as the color of choice. Two shades of paint later, we are perplexed, chagrined, and definitely not satisfied with the final outcome.
Lessons learned: 1) The end result won't look anything like what you have extrapolated in your minds eye from the 2" X 3" square sample. 2) Paint can radically change color depending on the lighting, time of day, and the current market value of pinto beans. And probably 37 (at least) other random variables. 3) Not only is Shagreen much too minty and pastel-y, its also a nasty eye disease AND a kind of rough leather.
So we're still searching for that elusive "non-intrusive-not-too-dark-olive green". We're hoping third times a charm. Any suggestions on finding the right color from you painting experts out there?

In the pictures, the wall actually look pretty good. No advice on a color though as we've never tried a green.
Let me first start by saying that painting sucks. Thank goodness I'm pregnant so I have excuse not to paint for a lil' while longer. I painted our powder room and I gave up after one wall.
What my mom did was...she took a bunch of samples of different shades from the store and taped them to the wall. Look at it during the day time ,night time, and etc. Also from far away vs. close up. I'm not sure if it will work for you guys but I know I saw my mom did that a lot while I was living at home. Sometimes those paint swatches would be on the wall for weeks cuz she couldn't decide. Or if you like something in between they can mix two colors together.
One thing that might help is to actually buy the smallest size paint can of the shade you are looking at. Paint a good size square of that color onto your wall. Let it dry and see how it does with the lighting etc. It seems like a waste to buy a couple of different colors but in the long run, it is well worth it. I don't think there is any other way to be able to see what it really will look like on your wall. Good luck! -Emily Betita
Hey Cheese, I randomly found your blog and I have to say that I think the paint color looks quite nice. However, I did paint a room at my house a wonderful color that seems to be what you are looking for. I am 99% sure it is from Home Depot, (1% that it is from Lowes) It was called Harmonic Tan and it was actually a really subtle olive-ish green. Loved it! -Valerie (as in Ryan's big sister!) -Congrats on 1 year closer to being done!
add gray that always helps everything. i think most colors come out too yellow or blue. add gray

Justin - white is always in!
Well when you figure it out let us know. By the time we get around to getting our own place you can help us with our decision. Take off a few days and paint our home, so we don't have to spend multiple days regretting each paint job…
